Abstract

Objectives: Laparoscopic inguinal hernia is performed more and more nowadays because it has many outstanding advantages. However, its routine application in elderly patients requires further evaluation.

Methods: A prospective, cross-sectional study on 100 elderly patients undergoing laparoscopic totally extraperitoneal (TEP) repair using mesh to treat inguinal hernia at Can Tho General Hospital from June 2023 to June 2024.

Results: The average age was 70.2 ± 8.5 (60-93) years old, male accounted for 97% and female accounted for 3%, The disease duration was less than 6 months accounted for 67%. The number of 51 unilateral inguinal hernias and 49 bilateral hernias with a total of 149 inguinal hernias. Classification of indirect inguinal hernias: 51%, direct 26.8%, mixed 22.2%. The average surgery time was 56.6 ± 20.5 minutes, complications included 1 case of vascular injury. The level of postoperative pain was low according to VAS. There was 1 case of sensory disturbance and 1 case of recurrence after 6 months of follow-up. Results: Good 86% patients.

Conclusion: The study results show laparoscopic totally extraperitoneal repair using mesh is a feasible and effective method for treating inguinal hernias in elderly patients, which can be applied at medical facilities with laparoscopic surgery.
