Abstract
Background: The COVID-19 pandemic is a matter of great concern today. Although most patients survive and recover from COVID-19 infection, evidences suggest that a significant proportion of patients continue to have persistent symptoms following COVID-19 infection. However, research on clinical and laboratory manifestations of post-COVID-19 patients is still very limited. This study investigates the clinical and laboratory manifestations of patients with post-COVID-19 syndrome at Thong Nhat Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City.
Methods: We performed a descriptive cross-sectional study on all patients diagnosed with post-COVID-19 syndrome and treated in the Post-COVID-19 ICU and Rehabilitation Department of Thong Nhat Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City from September 2021 to January 2022.
Results: There were 160 patients included in the study, 55.0% male and 45.0% female. 104 patients (65%) had mild/moderate COVID-19 infection, 48 patients (30%) had severe disease, 8 patients (5%) were critically ill. Common clinical manifestations included fatigue (75.0%), dyspnea (72.5%) and cough (63.7%). Pneumonia was the most common post-COVID-19 complication (58.8%) with most patients having lung lesions on radiographs. Laboratory abnormalities were noted such as chest radiographic lung lesions, anemia, increased C-reactive protein, increased D-dimer, decreased albumin, and decreased ferritin. There were 139 patients (86.9%) successfully treated, 11 patients (6.9%) transferred to another specialty and 10 patients (6.3%) died during hospital treatment.
Conclusions: The post-COVID-19 syndrome included a wide range of clinical manifestations, complications, and laboratory abnormalities and occured in all degrees of COVID-19 infection. Study results have warned severe outcomes in the post-COVID-19 period, even death.
