Abstract
Background: Diseases caused by wind - cold are a group of diseases that appear year - round, occur at any age, and all genders, remarkably affect the health, work, and quality of life of patients. This study is aimed to find out the prevalence and clinical characteristics of some diseases caused by wind - cold type and other related factors in patients at Thua Thien Hue Traditional Medicine Hospital and the Department of Traditional Medicine, Hue Central Hospital.
Methods: A descriptive cross - sectional study was conducted on 499 patients diagnosed with diseases caused by wind - cold type at the Department of Traditional Medicine, Hue Central Hospital, and Thua Thien Hue Traditional Medicine Hospital who had enough criteria for selecting diseases belonging to wind - cold type according to Traditional Medicine and volunteered to participate in the study. Patients with diseases caused by wind - cold type occurring in low back pain had the highest rate with 61.3%, followed by shoulder and neck pain at 32.5%, and the lowest was Bell’s palsy at 6.2%. Regarding the location of the pulse, the proportion
of patients with floating pulses was the highest, accounting for 62.7%, 71.6%, and 96.8% of shoulder and neck pain, low back pain, and Bell’s palsy, respectively, moderate pulses accounted for over 80.0% in all 3 diseases, and the rate of full pulses was over 90.0% (93.1%, 95.7%, and 96.8%, respectively). Most of the patients coming to the hospital had white, thin, and moist tongue coatings. There was a correlation between the diseases of wind - cold type and symptoms of tongue features, fear of wind and cold, bitter taste in mouth, urination, defecation, sleep, pulse location, and
pulse frequency (p < 0.05).
Conclusion: Most of the patients suffering diseases caused by wind - cold type had floating pulses, moderate pulses, and thin, white tongue coatings. There was a correlation between the diseases of wind - cold type and symptoms of tongue features, fear of wind and cold, bitter taste in mouth, urination, defecation, sleep, pulse location, and pulse frequency (p < 0.05).
