Abstract
Background: Heart failure is critical in its disease burden, mortality, and care cost. The causes of pediatric heart failure are diverse; the clinical manifestations vary depending on the children’s age, and sometimes they are masked by the symptom of other organs. Therefore, it is still tricky when making a diagnosis early. Objectives: To describe clinical, echocardiography characteristics and etiology of heart failure in children; To determine the relevance between clinical, echocardiography symptoms and the severity of heart failure.
Methods: 79 patients from 0 months to 15 years of age were diagnosed with heart failure and admitted to Pediatric Center - Hue Central Hospital from February 2019 to May 2020. Set up a cross - sectional study.
Results: The most common symptom of heart failure in children was poor feeding (88,61%), and inadequate peripheral perfusion (7.6%) was the least common. Most of the pediatric patients had mild heart failure (60.67%). Congenital heart disease was the cause with the highest rate (88.61%). 64.56% of patients had severe pulmonary hypertension, and only 13.9% had systolic dysfunction. There was a significant association between poor weight gain, poor peripheral perfusion, hyperactive heart, enlarged heart, left ventricular systolic dysfunction, and pulmonary hypertension and heart failure severity (p < 0.05).
Conclusions: Congenital heart disease is the leading cause of heart failure. Most heart failure is mild, with preserved systolic function. There was a significant association between poor weight gain, decreased peripheral perfusion, hyperactive heart, enlarged heart, left ventricular systolic dysfunction, and pulmonary hypertension and heart failure severity
