Abstract

Anxiety, depression, and quality of life of caregivers of cancer patients at Hue Central Hospital

ABSTRACT

Background: Caregivers of cancer patients face prolonged caregiving burdens, increasing the risk of anxiety, depression, and reduced quality of life (QoL). This study aimed to assess anxiety, depression, and QoL among caregivers and to identify associated factors.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 150 caregiver–patient dyads at the Department of Medical Oncology 2, Hue Central Hospital (February–May 2025). Data were collected using a socio-demographic questionnaire, the Caregiver Quality of Life Index–Cancer (CQOL-C), and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). Multivariable linear regression was performed to identify factors associated with anxiety, depression, and QoL among caregivers.

Results: The prevalence of anxiety and depression symptoms among caregivers was 20.0% and 14.6%, respectively. The mean QoL score was 52.1 ± 15.32. Caregiver anxiety was associated with opportunities to discuss prognosis, cancer type, monthly income, and relationship with the patient (F = 3.057; p = 0.001; R² = 0.287). Depression was associated with educational level, residential area, opportunities to discuss treatment plans, ECOG performance status, surgery, and patient anxiety (F = 3.296; p = 0.001; R² = 0.309). QoL was associated with residential area, caregiving time, surgery, willingness to disclose diagnosis, opportunities to discuss treatment, disease duration, and patient anxiety (F = 4.650; p = 0.001; R² = 0.417).

Conclusions: Caregivers experience substantial psychological burden. Integrating psychological support into cancer care is essential to improve QoL for both caregivers and patients.
