Abstract
Objective: To describe the current situation of cavities and gingivitis in children with autism spectrum disorder at some primary schools in Hue City, and determine the relationship between the level of ASD and the rate of cavities, gingivitis in this subject.
Methods: A cross - sectional descriptive study was conducted on 218 children with ASD aged 6 - 12 years who studied at some primary schools in Hue city. The level of ASD was evaluated using the CARS. Doctors of odonto - stomatology determined cavities, gingivitis.
Results: The overall rate of cavities in the study subjects was high (accounting for 80.3%), of which permanent cavities accounted for 70.2% and deciduous cavities accounted for 77.1%. The general smtr index of primary teeth was 6.1; The overall SMTr index of permanent teeth was 3.1. The rate of gingivitis is 79.4%, including 62.9% mild gingivitis and 16.5% severe gingivitis. There was a relationship between the level of ASD and the rate of cavities, gingivitis.
Conclusion: The prevalence of dental caries and gingivitis was high. Health care planners should develop preventive programs targeted at high risk groups such as this study population.
