Abstract

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the clinical and subclinical characteristics, the prevalence of lymphovascular space invasion (LVSI), and the disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) rates in patients with stage I cervical cancer.

Methods: A prospective study was conducted on 29 patients with stage I cervical cancer who underwent radical hysterectomy with pelvic lymph node dissection. Tumor specimens were strictly handled at Hue Central Hospital from September 2021 to December 2022. Patients were followed up every three months, with a mean follow-up duration of 25.2 months.

Results: The average age of patients was 50.1 years. Preoperative staging included 1 patient with stage IA, 18 patients with stage IB1, and 10 patients with stage IB2. LVSI was identified in 2 patients (6.9%), both of whom experienced postoperative recurrence at 18 and 21 months. The mean DFS was 25.24 ± 0.51 months, and the mean OS was 29.24 ± 0.53 months. The two-year survival rate was 96.6%, and the survival rate at the end of the study was 93.1%.

Conclusion: LVSI in stage I cervical cancer is associated with an increased risk of early recurrence. Strict handling of tumor specimens is essential for detecting LVSI, thereby enhancing postoperative adjuvant treatment planning.
