Abstract
Introduction: Neonatal bowel obstruction (NBO) is a type intestinal obstruction which occurs in the first 30 days of life. The incidence of this disease is estimated around 1/2000 live births. Many conditions can cause bowel obstruction in children. Delay in diagnosis and management can lead to adverse consequences including necrosis, perforation, infection and death.
Materials and methods: 30 patients aged less than 28 days, admitted to Hue Central Hospital were diagnosed with neonatal bowel obstruction and underwent surgery from 4/2014 to 10/2016
Result: The percentages of full-term, preterm and very preterm babies were 76.6%, 16.7% and 6.7%, respectively. Children with normal birth weight accounted for the majority of 83.3%. 8/30 children died (26.7%).
Conclusion: At our facility, the mortality rate for neonatal bowel disease was still high. The main causes of death were not related to surgical techniques and complications. The preterm and low birth weight groups, and the group with associated birth defects, had higher mortality rates.
