Abstract

Background: Acne vulgaris is common in pupils and students, the disease affects aesthetics and the risk of scarring. We conducted this study to survey the severity of acne vulgaris and evaluate the risk of acne scars among students of Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Hue University.

Methods: Cross-sectional study of 600 students of Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Hue University aged 18-23 to examine skin diseases, acne severity, scar severity and assess the risk of acne scarring.

Results: 94.3% of students had acne vulgaris, other cutaneous diseases accounted for 3% or less. Acnes severity with almost clear accounted for 47.2%, mild 32.5%, moderate 16.3%, severe 4%. The severity of acne is related to gender. Students with acne scars accounted for 30.7% and without scars accounted for 69.3%. Low risk of acne scars was 49.8%, high risk was 59.2%.

Conclusions: Acne vulgaris is very common in students, the severity of the disease with almost clear and mild was dominant. Students without scars account for a high percentage. The risk of low-grade acne scars is almost equal to high-grade.
