Abstract
Objective: To survey the current status of dental caries, gingivitis and treatment needs of children 6 - 12 years old with cleft lip and palate.
Subjects and methods: Children 6 - 12 years old with cleft lip and palate who had not had surgery and had surgery came to the Center for Odonto - Stomatology, Hue Central Hospital from 3/2021 to 10/2022. Study design: cross - sectional descriptive study. The research variables include: assessment of dental caries; index of decay, loss, filling; gingivitis; treatment needs (proportion of teeth needing simple fillings, percentages of teeth needing root canal treatment, percentage of teeth needing extraction, percentage of children needing tartar removal and gingivitis treatment).
Results: The overall prevalence of dental caries in the study was: 84.5%. Caries in deciduous teeth accounted for 82.4% and permanent teeth caries was 35.8%. Children with cleft lip and palate accounted for the highest rate of dental caries 88.3%, the lowest in children with only cleft palate (46.2%). The rate of gingivitis was 34.1%. Mentioning treatment needs: The percentage of teeth that need simple filling: 58.3%; the rate of teeth needing root canal treatment: 11.2%; Rate of teeth to be extracted: 5.2%; The rate of children needing tartar removal: 22.7%.
Conclusion: Tooth decay, gingivitis are very common in children 6 - 12 years old with cleft lip and palate. Children should be taken to specialized medical facilities and hospitals for dental examination and treatment, especially restoration of lost teeth, filling of decayed teeth, and tartar removal.
