Abstract

Overview: The surgical removal of impacted lower third molars (ILTM) is one of the most common operations performed in oral and maxillofacial surgery. It is an invasive surgical procedure, which may lead to postoperative pain, swelling and trismus. The effect of laser Diode in alleviating the complications related to the extraction of ILTM have been discussed in the literature. In Vietnam, the laser Diode has a wide range of applications in dental field. However, the application of laser Diode after extracting lower third molars is still in the process of research and clinical trials. 

Objectives: To describe the clinical features and x-ray’s characteristics, to evaluate the effect of supportive treatment by laser Diode in alleviating the complications (swelling, pain and trismus) after the surgical extraction of lower third molars.
Research subjects and method: Prospective and desriptive study, Clinical intervention study with case control; half-mouth examination design, on 35 patients had two equivalent mandibular impacted third molars which was indicated surgical treatment. The results were evaluated at 3 times: 1, 2 and 7 days postoperatively.
Results: There was significant difference (p<0.05) in reducing swelling, pain and trimus between laserused group and control group at 3 times postoperatively: 1, 2 and 7 days.
Conclusion: This study has demonstrated that laser Diode is an effective therapy for the alleviation of
postoperative complications after third-molar surgery.
