Abstract
Background: Managing fractures of distal tibia is still a subject of debate for orthopaedic surgeons in terms of both, reduction and fixation. Treatmentmethods can be conservative or operative management. Minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis (MIPO) maintains biological configuration of distal tibia and fracture hematoma and also provides a construct, which is biomechanically more stable, brings many significant advantages.
Methods: 30 patients with distal tibia fractures were applied with locking plate operation using the MIPO technique at the Orthopedic Department, Tay Nguyen Region General Hospital, from Jan to Dec 2022.
Results: On the 30 patients with distal limb fracture performed with MIPO, bone union rate, according to JL Haas and JY De La Cafinière classification: very good union 80%; good union 10%; average 10%. Time averaged union was 20.9 weeks. Ter - Schiphorst’s recovery results were good and very good at 84.4% and 15.6% respectively. No complications were seen. Good post - operative rehabilitation results and high patient’s satisfaction were observed.
Conclusion: Our study shows that plating with MIPO is an effective treatment for distal tibia fractures, considering union time and complications rate, promotes early union and functional recovery.
