Abstract
Introduction: Survey on knowledge and attitudes of patients and their relatives about risks in medical examination and treatment or medical incidents at Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy hospital in 2019.
Method: Descriptive horizontal study with questionnaire of inpatients and their relatives that being treated in hospitals of Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy.
Results: The study results showed that 72.3% of the participants had heard (knew) about medical incidents, only 36.3% of the subjects had good knowledge of medical incidents. 4.9% of the participants answered that they themselves had encountered risks in medical examination and treatment and 71.4% said that these risks have a negative impact on their health and life. 66.3% of patients and their relatives believe that medical incidents are completely preventable, up to 76% of the study subjects want to actively learn about medical incidents and 73.4% of them think that health workers should advise them about risks can be encountered in the course of medical examination and treatment. 66.6% of the participants said that the professional qualifications of health workers were the main cause of medical incidents. Other causes can lead to medical incidents, 64% of study subjects said that it was patient consciousness and factors related to infrastructure, equipment,… (60.9%).
Conclusion: The proportion of patients and their relatives with good knowledge and attitudes about the risks in medical examination and treatment or incident is not high. Be aware that the knowledge and attitudes of the patient and their relatives are important factors in reducing the occurrence of medical incidents as well as ensuring safety in the facility and improving quality of medical examination and treatment.
