Abstract
Background: Children with cancer must undergo complex and lengthy treatment, with many types of chemicals... causing the child’s normal development and quality of life (QoL) to be affected by toxicity and side effects of treatment.
Methodsː A descriptive cross-sectional study with longitudinal follow - up was conducted on 69 children with cancer aged 8 - 16 years who were treated at the Pediatric Center, Hue Central Hospital.
Resultsː The overall QoL of the study patients was around 1.5 points, which is moderately affected. The most affected domain was school. There was no difference between the QoL scores as assessed by the children themselves and their parents. There was no difference in QoL between age groups. Solid tumors had a greater impact on QoL than hematological tumors, with mean QoL scores of 2 for solid tumors and 1.33 for hematological tumors. The mean QoL scores were 2.34 at the time of diagnosis, 1.83 during the stable treatment phase, and only 0.76 at the end of treatment.
Conclusionsː The PedQL 4.0 questionnaire is a feasible tool for assessing the QoL of children with cancer aged 8 - 16 years. Treatment contributed to an improvement in the QoL of cancer patients.
