Abstract
Background: Biopsy is the gold standard in the diagnosis of prostate cancer. In which, rectal biopsy has become the standard method in the past 30 years. We reviewed more 4098 cases of rectal biopsies to evaluate the detection rate and complication rate of this technique.
Methods: 4098 cases of transrectal prostate biopsies were performed at the Urogenital Interventional Unit under ultrasound guidance in the period 1/2018 - 6/2022. Conduct a review of records, collect histological results, evaluate complications in the first week after biopsy.
Results: The mean age was 71.7 ± 5.3 years old (the youngest patient was 32 years old, the oldest patient was 100 years old). The positive histological result were 37%. After the procedure, 7.98% of patients had anorectal bleeding, 12% had gross hematuria, 2 cases required blood transfusion, 3.1% had urinary retention, 3.98 % had fever after biopsy, 12 cases of sepsis, 1 case of septic shock, 1 case of anaphylaxis with local anesthetic. There was no death.
Conclusions: Overall, a rectal biopsy is safe and effective. Complications can be prevented by excluding contraindications, screening high-risk factors, prophylactic antibiotics, stabilizing infection, thorough disinfection, good enema and analgesics, good control biopsy needle path and carefully follow up after procedure.
