Abstract

Kidney transplantation is the preferred renal replacement therapy in patients with end - stage kidney disease because patients have a longer and healthier life than dialysis. Still, due to the scarcity of donor’s kidneys, the waiting list for kidney transplants keeps increasing. In the past, ABO blood group incompatibility was considered an absolute contraindication for kidney transplantation due to the increased risk of antibody - mediated rejection and premature loss of the transplanted kidney. This review summarizes the understanding of ABO - incompatible living donor kidney transplantation, desensitization methods, and clinical outcomes studied in ABO - incompatible living donor kidney transplantation.
