Abstract
Background: Hypertension is the leading cause of death and leads to the deaths of millions of people each year. Its treatment needs to be continuous, long - term, and strictly as directed by the doctors to control and prevent dangerous complications from occurring. Therefore, treatment adherence in hypertension is extremely important.
Objectives: (1) Survey the use of antihypertensive medications among outpatients at Hue Central Hospital. (2) Assess the degree of treatment adherence and study factors related to medication adherence in hypertensive patients.
Methods: A cross - sectional description was conducted on 161 hypertensive outpatients treated at Hue Central Hospital were included and surveyed for treatment adherence with a follow - up examination after home treatment. Results: Beta - blockers and ACE inhibitors were the two most commonly used medication groups (54.0% and 53.4%, respectively). The rate of using polytherapy was higher than that of monotherapy: 78.3% >21.7%. The average number of medications used by the patients in the follow - up prescriptions was 4.27 ± 1.507 per prescription. The figure for patients with good treatment adherence was 77.6%. Patients with good adherence were able to have good blood pressure, the figure was 2.423 times greater than those with poor adherence (OR = 2.423; 95% CI: 1.092 - 5.378); patients with adverse events had better adherence than patients without adverse events (85.0% vs. 63.0%) (OR = 0.299; 95% CI: 0.129 - 0.632; p = 0.002); the group of patients with changes in living habits adhered better than that of patients with no change (81.5% > 64.9%) (OR = 2.468; 95% CI: 1.058 - 5.758; p = 0.037).
Conclusion: The rate of using polytherapy regimens was higher than that of monotherapy regimens. Patients with good treatment adherence may have better control of their blood pressure than those with poor treatment adherence.
