Abstract
Background: Cleft palate is a common birth defect, due to fetal maxillofacial development disorders between the 6th and 12th week of pregnancy. It is a malformation that greatly affects the function of eating, pronunciation, respiration, and aesthetics due to deformities of the jawbones, teeth, lips, and nose. The research aims to evaluate the results of treatment within 3 months after cleft palate surgery at the Odonto-Stomatology Center, Hue Central Hospital.
Methods: The study described 38 patients with cleft palate operated on at the Odonto - Stomatology Center, Hue Central Hospital from February 2023 to October 2023. Evaluation of surgical results and postoperative complications, after 1 month and 3 months.
Results: The majority of patients were discharged from the hospital on the 7th day accounting for 73.7%. Monitoring the condition of surgical incision care: There were 2 patients with bleeding, and hemorrhage control (5.3%). 2 patients had pseudomembranous on the surgical incisions (5.3%) and 1 patient had infectious incision (2.6%). The flaps of all patients showed a pinkish color. 3 patients with partial stitches broken open (7.9%) and 1 patient with palatal perforations (2.6%). The results at the hospital discharge period: the patients experienced good results accounting for 89.5%, the average rate was 7.9%, and there was 1 patient (2.6%) with an incision’s stitches broken open and palatal perforation. Healing outcomes after 2 - 3 months of surgery reached a good rate of 92.1%, an average rate of 5.3%, and a poor rate of 2.6%. Postoperative complications: 2 patients with mild infections, incision edema (5.3%), and 1 with edematous dyspnoea (2.6%).
Conclusion: The process of treatment after cleft palate surgery at Odonto - Stomatology Center, Hue Central Hospital plays a vital role, which helping patients recover quickly, be discharged from the hospital early, as well as promptly detect unusual signs to handle.
