Abstract
Background: Kidney transplantation is the best treatment of choice for children with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) because it improves patient survival. However, pediatric kidney transplantation data from Viet Nam remain limited. This study was conducted to evaluate the post transplant graft function, complications and patient and graft survival among pediatric ESRD patients undergoing kidney transplantation at Children's Hospital 2.
Methods: We conducted a retrospective study of 37 pediatric patients with ESRD who underwent kidney transplantation at Children’s Hospital No. 2 from June 2004 to August 2025.
Results: The median age at transplantation was 12.8 years, with a median body weight of 32.6 kg. Living donors accounted for 91,8% of cases, while only 8,2% were from deceased donors. The rates of acute cellular rejection and antibody-mediated rejection were 32,4% and 13,5%, respectively, while chronic rejection accounted for 5,4%. The median serum creatinine levels at 6 months and 1 year were 0,75 mg/dl and 0,7 mg/dl, respectively. Graft survival rates at 1, 5, and 10 years were 91,89%, 82,4% and 76,06% respectively. Patient survival rates at 1, 5, and 10 years post-transplant were 94,59%, 94,59% và 87,32% respectively.
Conclusions: Over 21 years, pediatric kidney transplantation at Children’s Hospital 2 has achieved positive outcomes, characterized by stable graft function and relatively high graft and patient survival rates. Therefore, expansion of the pediatric kidney transplantation program is highly essential.
