Abstract
Background: Submucosal tumor (SMT) is defined as any lesion that develops below the mucosal or muscularis propria of the gastrointestinal tract wall. Submucosal tunneling endoscopic resection (STER) is a new method that can now be performed without the support of laparoscopy, many studies have demonstrated the safety and effectiveness of this method in the treatment of gastrointestinal submucosal tumor.
Methods: A retrospective descriptive study on patients with gastrointestinal submucosal tumor treated by submucosal tunneling endoscopic resection at the Hospital of Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy from 2020 to 2023.
Results: 23 patients (M:F 15:8) with mean age 51,35 ± 15,86 years old underwent STER. 6 tumors located at esophagus, 1 tumors located at rectum, all the remains tumors were in the stomach with the mean tumor size 14,7 ± 7,41mm. Mean procedure time was 81,59 ± 50,32 minutes. VAS score were 0,27 ± 0,46. No perioperative complication. Mean length of stay in hospital was 5,36 ± 3,13 days. Mean postoperative length of stay was 3,64 ± 2,59 days.
Conclusions: STER is an effective and relatively safe technique in the treatment of gastrointestinal submucosal tumor. Further studies are necessary to evaluate the results of these techniques.
