Abstract

Background: Common bile duct (CBD) stones are a frequent cause of biliary obstruction and infection. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is an effective minimally invasive technique increasingly applied in clinical practice. Quang Ngai General Hospital has recently implemented ERCP for the management of CBD stones. This study aims to evaluate its initial clinical outcomes.

Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 19 patients diagnosed with CBD stones and treated with ERCP at the Department of Gastroenterology. Data regarding demographics, stone characteristics, intervention techniques, complications, and changes in laboratory parameters were collected and analyzed.

Result: There were 8 female and 11 male patients. The average age was 70 ± 12.4 years.
Stones measuring 10–20 mm accounted for the highest proportion, at 63.2%.
Single stones were the most common, also accounting for 63.2%.
The success rate was 89,5%. Complications from the procedure occurred in 42.1% of cases. There was a significant difference in blood total bilirubin levels before and after the ERCP procedure (p < 0.026).

Conclusion: ERCP demonstrates a high success rate and effectively improves biliary obstruction in the treatment of CBD stones.
