Abstract
Objective: To investigate the clinical and paraclinical characteristics of patients with laryngeal cancer at Hue Central Hospital and to evaluate the outcomes of adjuvant radiotherapy in this patient population.
Methods: A combined prospective and retrospective descriptive study. A convenient sample of 33 patients who received adjuvant radiotherapy at the Oncology Center – Hue Central Hospital from February 2021 to September 2024 was included.
Results: The mean age was 57.9 ± 7.4 years. All patients were male. Hoarseness was the most common presenting symptom (90.9%). Most patients were diagnosed at stage III (57.6%) and stage IV (15.2%). Risk factors included: pT3 in 57.6%, pT4 in 21.2%, pN2-3 in 21.2%, positive surgical margins in 12.1%, extracapsular lymph node extension in 9.1%, and subglottic extension in 33.3%. Treatment outcomes: All patients received 3D conformal radiotherapy (3D-CRT). Adjuvant radiotherapy alone was administered in 60.6% of patients, while 39.4% received concurrent chemoradiotherapy with weekly Cisplatin. The median interval from surgery to radiotherapy was 55 days. The median total treatment duration was 49 days. Most early and late radiation-related toxicities were grade 1–2. The 1-year and 3-year overall survival rates were 97% and 88.3%, respectively. The 1-year and 3-year disease-free survival rates were 91% and 79.6%, respectively.
Conclusion: Adjuvant radiotherapy is an effective treatment modality for laryngeal cancer, reducing the risk of recurrence with a low rate of complications.
