Abstract

Background: Macular edema secondary to retinal vein occlusion (RVO) is one of the leading causes of irreversible vision loss. Intravitreal Ranibizumab injection has been demonstrated to improve vision and reduce macular edema; however, clinical data in Vietnam remain limited.

Methods: A prospective descriptive study was conducted on 32 eyes of 31 patients diagnosed with macular edema secondary to RVO at the Eye Center - Hue Central Hospital from February 2023 to May 2024. Patients received three monthly intravitreal Ranibizumab injections and were followed up for three months. Visual acuity (ETDRS chart) and central retinal thickness (CRT) on OCT were assessed before and after treatment.

Results: After three months of treatment, 90.6% of patients showed improvement in visual acuity. The mean visual acuity improved from 22 up to 48 letter ETDRS (p < 0.05). The mean CRT significantly decreased from 484.31 ± 168.81 µm to 179.91 ± 87.9 µm (p < 0.05). The primary complication observed was subconjunctival hemorrhage (18.75%), with no cases of severe intraocular complications.

Conclusion: The study confirms the efficacy and safety of intravitreal Ranibizumab for treating macular edema due to RVO. Early detection and timely intervention are crucial in optimizing visual outcomes.
