Abstract

Introduction: Urinary catheterization is a common procedure in urological care, but it may lead to serious complications, especially in patients with a history of urinary tract surgeries or interventions. One rare complication is that catheter becomes kinked and the balloon is inflated in the urethra.

Case report: This report describes an 85-year-old male patient with multiple comorbidities and a history of several transurethral bladder tumor resections, as well as repeated intravesical chemotherapy administered via catheter. In this instance, the Foley catheter was kinked, and the balloon was inflated while still in the urethra. The patient was transferred to the operating room, where a urologist deflated the balloon endoscopically via urethroscopy under spinal anesthesia.

Conclusion: This is a representative example of a technical complication that may occur during urinary catheterization in patients with a history of multiple urethral interventions. The practical lesson is that patients with a history of urological interventions should undergo thorough evaluation and specialist consultation. In some cases, catheterization should be performed under endoscopic guidance.
