Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of 3D technology in mandibular reconstruction using free fibula flap.

Methods: The study was conducted on 15 patients (10 cases of ameloblastoma, 5 cases of squamous cell carcinoma) at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Hue Central Hospital, from August 2022 to February 2025. The patients had mandibular bone defects due to ameloblastoma or squamous cell carcinoma. The surgical plan was created using open-source software Radiant, Meshmixer, and Blender to design a surgical guide template.

Results: The results show that morphological parameters such as the distance between the condyles, the mandibular angle, and the length of the fibula segments did not show significant changes (p > 0.05), indicating high accuracy between the preoperative plan and the postoperative results. The surgical time was shortened due to the application of 3D technology. Postoperatively, 95% of the patients had stable occlusion and did not experience difficulty in eating. Aesthetic evaluation showed that 75% of patients felt more confident with their appearance after surgery.

Conclusion: 3D technology enhances accuracy, reduces surgical time and complications, and provides high functional and aesthetic outcomes. It is an effective method, particularly in healthcare settings with limited resources.

Keywords:  3D technology, mandibular reconstruction, free fibula flap, reconstructive surgery.
