Abstract

Purpose: Survey the incidence and levels of depression of parents with children with cancer treated
at the Pediatric department of K hospital from January 2018 to October 2018. - Analysis of risk factors for
depression of parents of children with cancer.
Subjects: 158 parents of 153 children with confirmed cancers treated in Pediatric Oncology Department, Viet Nam National Cancer Hospital from April, 2018 to October, 2018.
Method: Observe and test with a set of assessment questions according to the Depression Anxiety
Stress Scales 21 (DASS 21). All research subjects were interviewed independently with no suggestions, no
orientation, no personal opinion of interviewers

Results: Depression, Anxiety and Stress are very commont in caregivers in taking care for cancer
children, especially parents. Anxiety accounts for high rate (46%), followed by depression (30%). 16,7%
of father/mother have severe depression, 50% of parents have moderate depression. The mother has a
higher rate of depression than the father (63% versus 37%, p = 0.036). A number of factors are related to
the incidence of depression in parents of significantly different cancer patients: + Low education level of
parents. + Parents living in rural and remote areas + Financial assistance. + Critical marital status of parents. + The late disease stage of the child.
