Abstract

Objectives: Assessment of nutritional status at hospital admission of patients with acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (BPTNMT).

Participants and Methods: Cross-sectional, retrospective description of 80 inpatients at the Respiratory Center - Bach Mai Hospital. Collect clinical examination data, chest x-ray, respiratory function measurement, basic blood tests, arterial blood gases, anthropometric measurements [height, weight, arm circumference (MAC)], SGA score, diet interview, daily caloric intake, residual fluid measurement when nasogastric tube is inserted.

Results: The There are 57.5% patients with low weight BMI < 18.5 kg/m2. 100% at risk of malnutrition in which levels A and B are 38% and level C is 62% (according to SGA). 43% of patients had a lower-than-normal MAC arm circumference. Assessment of malnutrition (mild, moderate and severe) according to SGA is 100% of patients, according to MAC or according to BMI is 52.5%. There is a strong relationship between SGA and BMI (OR=20.08, P=0.0000). There is a strong correlation between BMI and MAC (OR=61.4, p=0,000).

Conclusion: Many patients with acute exacerbation of BPTNMT are admitted to the hospital in the state of underweight, poor diet, and inadequate nutrition. In order to improve the quality of treatment and increase the possibility of recovery, we need to combine many methods together to evaluate the nutrition of a specific patient, thereby focusing on improving the nutrition for each patient, through routes: feeding through a catheter or intravenous line or regular meals if the patient can afford it.
