Abstract
Objectives: To evaluate the results of breast conserving surgery (BCS) and intraoperation radiation therapy (IORT) on breast cancer patients at Hue Central Hospital.
Methods: This retrospective descriptive study was conducted on 91 breast cancer patients who were at stages T1N0M0 - T2N0M0, tumor size less than 3cm and underwent BCS and IORT at Hue Central Hospital from 2014 to August 2022.
Results: The average age of patients was 48.2 ± 9.3 years old. Patients with tumor size T1 accounted for 62.9%.Patients with pN0 accounted for 94.3%. There were 76 pathological results invasive ductal carcinoma accounted for 85.4%. Patients in the Luminal A group accounted for the highest percentage (57.3%). After 5 years, there were 13 patients with relapse, accounting for 14.6%. The mean DFS was 103.5 ± 3.3 months (95% CI = 97.0 - 109.9). DFS for 5 years at 85.4%. The mean overall survival was 110.2 ± 1.8 months. Overall 5 - year survival of the whole study group was estimated at 95.5%. DFS in T1 group, negative lymph nodes higher than in T2 group, positive lymph nodes. This difference is statistically significant, p < 0.05, but not statistically significant when comparing the age factor older or younger than 40, p = 0.72. OS in the T1 group, negative lymph nodes, age > 40, higher in group T2, positive lymph nodes, and age < 40. This difference was statistically significant, p < 0.05.
Conclusion: Breast preserving surgery and intraoperation radiation therapy is safe, effective and necessary operation for early breast cancer treatment.
