Abstract
Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus is common and dangerous in the elderly. If the patients weren’t controlled, one of the complications we were interested in recently is osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a common disease in postmenopausal women with a rate of more than 20%, thus increasing the risk of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Objective: Determine the rate of osteoporosis in menopausal women with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Method: Cross-sectional study on 40 menopausal women with type 2 diabetes mellitus at Hue Central Hospital from 2011 to 2012. The diagnosis of osteoporosis is based on bone mineral density as measured by the DEXA method. Diagnostic criteria for osteoporosis according to the World Health Organization. Data were processed by software SPSS 11.5.
Results: In the lumbar spine, the rate of osteoporosis is 45% in menopausal women with type 2 diabetes mellitus. The rate of femoral neck osteoporosis in diabetic type 2 women is 37.5%.
Conclusion: Increasing the rate of osteoporosis in menopausal women with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
