Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the role of renal scintigraphy in the treatment of ureteropelvic junction obstruction (UPJO) in children.

Methods: A observational descriptive study was conducted on 46 pediatric patients diagnosed with UPJ obstruction, with considerations for surgical reconstruction, at Hue Central Hospital from February 2023 to July 2024.

Results and discussion: The mean age of the study group was 5.6 ± 3.7 years, with a male-to-female ratio of approximately 3:1. Over 90% of the cases recorded unilateral UPJ obstruction, most commonly affecting the left kidney (70%). 84% of patients with unilateral renal pathology underwent reconstructive surgery with DRF (differential renal function) below 40%, which improved postoperatively.

Conclusions: The renal scintigraphy has role important in the treatment of ureteropelvic junction obstruction (UPJO) in children and the values this technique provides to clinicians in selecting the appropriate treatment options as well as in the long-term follow-up of cases requiring surgical intervention for UPJ reconstruction.
