Abstract
Objective: To determine the causes of hemoptysis in adult patients.
Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 168 patients diagnosed with hemoptysis. Based on clinical, paraclinical, imaging and treatment results (internal medicine, surgery) to explore the cause of hemoptysis.
Results: Common causes of hemoptysis were lower respiratory tract infections (21.43%), sequelae of old pulmonary tuberculosis (15.5%), active pulmonary tuberculosis (13.7%), broncho-lung cancer (11.9%), pulmonary mycosis (4.8%) and other causes (6.0%). There were 15.5% of cases where the cause was not determined. Patients with GPQ, sequelae of old pulmonary tuberculosis and active pulmonary tuberculosis had a higher rate of moderate-severe hemoptysis than those with other causes, patients with broncho-lung cancer had a higher risk of mild hemoptysis than those with other causes in general.
Conclusion: Determining the cause of hemoptysis is very important to optimize the treatment plan for the patient, especially in cases of severe hemoptysis, to avoid complications and death.
