Abstract

Background: The status of environmental hygiene in operating rooms have an important role in the care and treatment. Some studies showed; there was the relation between environmental pollution of operating rooms and surgical site infection rate. The operating rooms with standard environmental hygiene will reduce nosocomial infection, limiting infections transmitted through air, water and devices. The monitoring of ventilation, check the environmental hygiene will limit the environmental pollution in the operating rooms. Objectives: To assess the status of environmental hygiene in the operating rooms of Hue Central Hospital.
Methods: Cross-sectional descriptive study. Proceed on 29 operating rooms of Hue Central Hospital with 1005 samples cultured bacteria, data collected from 2007 to 2014.
Results: The study had 376 air samples and 629 surface samples, including operating rooms with positive pressure ventilation (PPV) was 74.5% and operating room without positive pressure ventilation (NPPV) was 25.5%. For PPV operating rooms, the air samples with bacterial counts> 35 cfu/m3 was the highest, with 58.6%. According to air bacterial standard in operating rooms (<35 cfu/m3), there were 41.4% operating rooms achieved and 58.6% did not. For NPPV operating rooms, the air samples with bacterial counts> 35 cfu/m3 upto 94.8%. PPV operating rooms with 72.1% of the sample did not have fungi, the percentage in NPPV operating rooms was 12.5%. There was 53.1% the samples of the NPPV operating rooms with the number of fungi colonies > 5, PPV operating rooms was only 6.8%. Bacteria presented in the air and surface environment of operating rooms were Bacillus sp and Staphylococcus blanc, in addition to Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus noncoagulase, Enterobacter cloacae, Burkholderia cepacia, Pseudomonas stutzeri in small quantities and scattered.
Conclusions: There were still many operating rooms that do not achive the standards on environmental hygiene. Bacteria that presented in the air and surface environment of operating room were mainly Bacillus. sp and Staphylococcus bacteria blanc.
