Abstract
Quality of patient care for emergency patient is affected by various factors. For example, less educational opportunity for nurses to update their knowledge, exhaustive 24 hour duty, less hygienic environment, shortage of medical equipment and insufficient maintenance on it.
In addition, shortage of manpower let patient family involved much in patient care. In order to improve patient care in such a condition, JICA Volunteer nurse has worked with head nurse and staff nurses especially focusing on following activities, "Nursing care based on scientific evidence and nursing assessment" and "Nursing care for patient's family".
In terms of "Nursing care based on scientific evidence and nursing assessment", bed side trainings for respiratory care and chest drain care, with demonstration of technique using educational material, have been performed for staff nurses. Especially the importance of observation and assessment for patient by regular rounds was emphasized. As the result, nurses could spend more time at bed side providing physical care for patients. Some positive outcomes also have been observed, for example, term of intubation period could be shortened and chest drain occlusion could be prevented too.
Secondly for "Nursing care for patient's family", education for patient's family about patient care and mental care have been encouraged as well. Some patients and patient's family commented that their anxiety had decreased.
What is important is continuation of those encouraged activities for nursing care. Therefore, it is necessary to encourage nurses to carry on motivating them giving a positive feedback by improved. patient care. In future, it also is highly expected to improve more nursing practices through further cooperation with head nurse and staff nurses, my colleagues.
