Abstract

Background: The community’s awareness of stroke directly influences the prevention, emergency response, and treatment of stroke patients. This study aims to assess the level of knowledge regarding stroke among caregivers of stroke patients in Northern Vietnam.

Methods: This cross-sectional study utilized a true/false questionnaire administered to 1080 caregivers at the five largest Stroke Centers in Northern Vietnam, located at the following hospitals: 108 Military Central Hospital, Bach Mai Hospital, Military Medical Hospital 103, Phu Tho Provincial General Hospital, and Thanh Hoa Provincial General Hospital.

Results: 62.4% of caregivers correctly identified at least three or more risk factors, 50.2% correctly identified over six risk factors. 44.2% correctly identified five initial symptoms of stroke, and 65.5% correctly identified at least two symptoms. Only 23.6% of relatives called the emergency number 115 when suspecting someone of having a stroke, 17% took the patient to the hospital immediately, while up to 40.2% chose finger pricking blood. 58.9% correctly chose at least three preventive methods, and 42.5% correctly chose at least six preventive methods, but 15.2% of caregivers chose to take one special medication for prevention. Having a graduate/postgraduate education level and residing in Hanoi were statistically significant with good knowledge of stroke.

Conclusion: The correct knowledge about stroke within the community in Northern Vietnam is not yet satisfactory, with many incorrect practices still prevalent. The group with better knowledge includes those residing in Hanoi with a university education or higher
