Assessment of the results of analgesic treatment with drugs for stage IV cancer patients

Abstract

Background: Pain is a common symptom and affects the quality of life in patients with stage IV cancer. Objectives: To examine the incidence, characteristics of pain and to evaluate the efficiency of analgesic treatment in patients.

Materials and methods: 45 stage IV cancer patients undergoing pain management at the Department of Oncology, Hue Central Hospital – 2 nd branch. Cross-sectional descriptive study.

Results: Average age: 64.23 in which male is more than female with 2/1 ratio. The average pain level accounted for the largest proportion (44.2%). The main cause of pain was directly from the tumor making up 51.1%. Pain relievers were the most commonly used, with 51%; 39/45 patients responded during treatment, in which complete pain relief consituted 35.6%.

Conclusions: Proper assessment of pain characteristics should be performed accurately and at the very beginning to provide the best pain relief for the patient.
